Dr. David Levine
LCSW
I came to clinical practice from an earlier career as an academic . I earned a PhD in Family Studies , Ohio State, 1981.
I taught a wide range of sociology courses at the lower —and upper-division levels. One of the courses was ‘Aging and Dying.’ I wanted to develop the clinical skills to work with this population. That led me to earning an MSW, FAU, 2008, and eventual licensure.
Presently, I work at Vitas Healthcare, since 2015. Here, I am part of an integrated team that includes a chaplain, nurses, HHAs, physician, and team manager.
My role is to provide psychosocial support to patients and their families, to help them come to terms, hopefully accept, the finality of life. I also provide bereavement services for those family members that request it .
I have recently started to offer Virtual therapy, Better Help, since 3/21. To date, I have mainly worked with patients in their 20s and 30s. The presenting issues have been depression, anxiety, trauma, and grief.
The treatment approach is informed by the presenting concern. So, for some, I use cognitive behavioral therapy, particularly Ellis’s ABCDE model.
Treatment includes video sessions, continued text messages, and the provision of educational materials.
I decided to pursue this because,1. Most people are unable to afford a private practitioner, and , 2. Emanating from the pandemic, I believe we have seen dramatic increases in depression, anxiety, suicide, trauma. We need as many trained clinicians as possible, to address underserved populations. I believe strongly in ‘giving back,’ which my mother and late grandmother believed in.
